November 18, 2015

The visual artist Paloma Torres, from the National System of Art Creators of the National Fund for Culture and Arts known as FONCA, received the distinction of Member of the International Academy of Ceramics based in Geneva, Switzerland, for her outstanding career .

Torres joins the five Mexican artists who are part of the prestigious institution founded in Switzerland in 1953 and every two years recognizes, internationally, the most relevant artistic work in the field of ceramics. The other artists who are part of the academy are: Gloria Carrasco, Guillermo Rosario, Gustavo Pérez and Ana Rosenzwieg.

"This distinction is a way to put the country into one of the most important cultural events, as well as keeping the tradition of ceramics alive" the creator said in an interview with the Fonca.

She also commented that "in the country, today, there are a lot of sculptors working the mud, but the younger generations are interested in ceramics, the material is noble. What interests me as a member of the Academy is to teach my country that ceramics has great scopes. "

The International Academy of Ceramics (AIC) consists of over 600 members from 55 countries and one of its main functions is to gather and establish networks and exchange between ceramists, potters, artists, designers, writers, collectors, gallery owners, curators and restorers worldwide.

Every two years the AIC organizes a congress in different countries, the next will be held in September 2016 in Barcelona, Spain. In this sense, the artist said that "through the congress a true cultural exchange takes place that allows the creator to achieve a greater professional development, while each member spreads the culture of their country, thus a very important enrichment is achieved, not only personally, but as a platform to disseminate their place of origin culture".

Besides the recognition, the Fonca artist prepares for 2016 the travelling exhibition Tramas Urbanas to Doha, Qatar, made in CaSa, in San Agustin Etla, Oaxaca, and this year was exhibited in Lebanon and is currently at the Kuwait Modern Art Museum, where she shows the result of one of the projects of ceramic sculpture that she made as a member of the National System of Art Creators.

It should be noted that under the Dual Year Mexico-United Kingdom, Torres shows until January the piece Construyendo la lluvia (Building rain), in the public space of Westferry Circle in London.

"The Fonca is a cultural crusade, you feedback yourself, it gives you a different view of the world, as an artist you have to be updated, the Fonca has allowed me to grow in the direction of confronting my work with the younger generations, besides giving me the time to produce, show and promote my work in an international environment", she said.
