Morelia´s historic heritage will promote video mapping

November 25, 2015

From November 18 to 21 the city of Morelia, Michoacán, will host the First International Mapping Festival (FIMA), which includes among its activities: master classes, conferences, a contest, video mapping projections and workshops in order to propose a dialogue and an effective link between professionals, students, participants in the digital media and the general public.

This meeting, which is considered unique in its kind, will bring together professionals and French, Spaniards, Belgians, Russians and Mexicans artists, and aims to show the best of this audiovisual technique that allows the viewer to rediscover their heritage and public spaces.

On November 19 to 21 from 20:00 to 22:00, it will be projected at explanada Benito Juárez, Mundo Iluminado (Enlightened World), an audiovisual piece composed by a selection of the best international video mapping, which is led by Xavi Bové and Irma Vila Ódena, same that was showed before at the International Mapping Festival of Girona, Spain,

Irma Vila Ódena, explained in an interview with the National Council for Culture and Arts, that video mapping is an art for all viewers, because it is showed in a public space where older and young people and children come and are fascinated by the light and the effects.

"I think that human being loves when something shines, when it is illuminated and this is an amazing effect to everyone. I think that when a building collapses, when an image is projected onto another skin or an object, everyone is fascinated and enjoy it", she said.

"Video mapping is like leaving the screen and project in the public space. First we started with the projection in large buildings, by using its facades and architectural features such as windows, doors, columns, but now we have gone further, in addition to project in large buildings, we project onto persons or objects in motion" Irma Vila said.

In Spaniard Xavi Bové's opinion, engineer in telecommunications, mapping consits in creating contents to be projected in three-dimensional surfaces, such as a building, a shoe or a clock, to what is called augmented reality.

Referring to the city of Morelia, which receives this kind of artistic manifestations, the creative awarded several prizes for his long experience in music, said that video mapping is a technique that will surely promote Morelia's historic heritage, either rediscovering or drawing it, so a city with this heritage is perfect to have a festival like this one.

"I welcome these initiatives happen, I think it is a great time this type of collaboration takes place. The festivals of light have been booming lately, with a video mapping festival the city is rediscovered, there is something in the light that attracts the viewer's attention, is something magical and using that magic to make them feel good is something that we must take advantage of the festivals encouraging the artistic local talent to carry out their projects. "

In his opinion, a festival has to be a window or a laboratory where all creatives do their works and show them, because it is an experimentation platform that should have three "legs": link it with training, that is why the realization of workshops and lectures; the creative thing, where participating artists are involved and, finally, the society, in order to rediscover their own city or it discovers itself.

Xavi Bové said that the basis of this festival is the competition, Así es Michoacán (This is Michoacán), where he will be jury and expects to be surprised. "Video mapping is now standardized, same resources are used, there are things that work like tear down buildings, burn them, but I expect to see new and different views of another culture such as the Mexican".

He stated that what the participants transmit not only lies in technique but in their inward look and wonder: why they are doing video mapping, what they want to transmit, as well as question themselves if they want to give an activist vision, some light and color, or play with the perception of the viewer. "The key is in moving or saying something", he said.

This professional from the artistic group Playmodes Studio as well as being jury in the contest Así es Michoacán, will participate in a round table where it will be discussed where video mapping is going and it will be projected in cinema format for 1 hour and 40 minutes his audiovisual piece Mundo Iluminado (Enlightened World), consisting of a best 12 works selection in the last few years.

"The interesting thing about being the artistic director of the International Mapping Festival of Girona in Spain, is come to see what talent there is in Mexico and bring it to our country. That's the key to what can be provided as a director of another organization to a festival", he said.

Meanwhile, Irma Vila Ódena, who selected the visual pieces of Mundo Iluminado (Enlightened World), said that Morelia's architecture is very interesting and video mapping projection will allow to look into the history of the buildings, transforming them or playing with textures and typical patterns.

"I think it will be very interesting for Morelia to make this festival, it is been proven that places that make video mapping events get many visitors and become a more cultural attraction for the city, which can provide greater value to history, buildings and culture", said Vila Ódena.
