Carlos Fuentes will be honored an academic and literary tribute

Carlos Fuentes Macías (Panama, Panama, November 11th, 1928-Mexico City, May 15th, 2012) one of the most important writers of the twentieth century in Mexico will be remembered with a colloquium at the University of Cambridge, UK.

Diego Gomez Pickering, Mexico's ambassador in Britain, said in an interview with the National Council for Culture and Arts (CONACULTA), that under the Mexico-United Kingdom Dual Year, Carlos Fuentes event will be held on Friday, October 9th : Symposium and Celebration, "an extraordinary professorship devoted to analyze the life, work and legacy of Carlos Fuentes an intellectual, writer and Mexican diplomat".

He said that in the event will participate colleagues, employees, intellectuals, researchers and specialists in the life of Carlos Fuentes, both Mexican and British, as: Steven Boldy, Nick Caistor, Maarten van Delden, Reidenrt Dhondt, Georgina García Gutiérrez, Hernán Lara Zavala, Silvia Lemus de Fuentes, Dominic Mortan, Florence Olivier, Rafael Olea Franco, Ignacio Padilla, Rafael Rojas, Heike Scharm and Erika Segre.

The ambassador, who has served as an internationalist, journalist and writer, pointed out that the chair was organized by the University of Cambridge, being in coordination with a person who knew Carlos Fuentes in life, as well as a specialist in his work, while the Conaculta and the British Council were in charge of the search of participants.

The colloquium will consist of round tables where it will be discussed separately about the academic, literary life and other aspects of the renowned novelist, seeking to underline "the importance of the life of Carlos Fuentes in the UK," Gómez Pickering said.

Regarding this activity, carried out under the dual year, the master in Cultural Development from Columbia University in New York, described it as very relevant, because Carlos Fuentes was a "fundamental" character in the recent relationship of both countries, so he called this academic and literary tribute as essential to the great man and author of La región más transparente, he emphasized.

Cambridge University is hosting the event because Carlos Fuentes served as a professor of Simon Bolivar Chair on 1986-1987.

The author of Aura, wrote much of his work in London where he spent long periods of time between 1968 and 2012, and his brilliant career, apart from the books, was demonstrated by his titles of professor at Harvard and Cambridge, and with a long list of honorary doctorates at some of the most important academic centers of higher education in the world.

According to Diego Gómez Pickering, the realization of the symposium is an iconic event in the calendar of the program of the Dual Year Mexico-UK, because it is the first time that the university honors Carlos Fuentes, after his death, as it is a place where the writer participated much.

The ambassador will attend the lecture, whose participation would be brief and concise, in order to emphasize the importance of Carlos Fuentes in Mexico-UK relationship.

Carlos Fuentes was honored numerous prestigious awards, including the Miguel de Cervantes Prize, the Prince of Asturias Literature Award, the Alfonso Reyes International, the Xavier Villaurrutia, the Biblioteca Breve or the National Prize of Sciences and Arts in Linguistics and Literature, as well as the Latinidad, granted by the Brazilian and French language academies.

The government of Mexico, Emmanuel College and the Department of Spanish and Portuguese at the University of Cambridge organize this event in honor of the Mexican writer, Carlos Fuentes: Symposium and Celebration will be held on October 9th, from 10:30 to 18:30 at University of Cambridge, UK.
