Flemish painting masterpieces in the exhibition: From Rubens to Van Dyck

A total of 59 Flemish painting jewels will be on display from Friday October 30 until March 27 2016 at the Museo Nacional de San Carlos (National Museum of San Carlos) in the exhibition entitled: From Rubens to Van Dyck. It includes oil paintings, etchings and engravings from the Gerstenmaier Collection.

Carmen Gaytán, director of the Museo Nacional de San Carlos, said that this exhibition is part of the efforts by the Instituto Nacional de Bellas Artes (INBA, for its acronym in Spanish) to close this year with a major international exhibition, after having brought Leonardo da Vinci and Michelangelo's to our country.

She said that "it is an effort to bring this collection, where you will find truly spectacular pieces; It comes a sensational Rubens, a series of Van Dyck engraved portraits; it comes a very interesting landscape painted by two artists both hands".

She also considered important the possibility of bringing exhibitions, "we have sought sponsorships and the will of the INBA to end the year with this great international display".

In addition, she said, From Rubens to Van Dyck is a tribute to collectors, as the pieces belong to the German Rudolf Gerstenmaier, whose generosity has enabled the exhibition arrives to Mexico, after appearing in Paris and negotiations for more than a year.

Marisa Oropeza, curator of the exhibit, said that the Gerstenmaier's is the most important private Flemish painting collection in the world, so From Rubens to Van Dyck is a unique occasion to appreciate this special time of Dutch painting.

The exhibition consists of 59 works, including oil paintings and engravings by artists such as Peter Paul Rubens, Anthony van Dyck, Martin de Vos, Victor Wolfvoet, Jan de Beer, Joos de Momper the Younger and Jan Brueghel the Elder, among others.

From Rubens to Van Dyck. The Gerstenmaier's Flemish painting collection has three main subjects: religion, mythology and still-life and landscape. The viewer will be able to learn masterpieces full of details with a superb handling of color and wonderful etchings, all pieces over 400 years old

Rudolf Gerstenmaier himself celebrated that this exhibition has finally come to Mexico, after being in Paris, Lima and Santiago de Chile, so he invited the public to "enjoy and have a good time."

During the exhibition the viewer can admire paintings such as The Adoration of the Shepherds, by Martin de Vos, 1593; Triptych of the Adoration of the Magi, attributed to the Master of the Von Groote Adoration; Calvary, by Victor Wolfvoet; Garden vase with flowers, by Pedro Gaspar Verbruggen II, and Birds, by Alexander Adriaenssen.

However, one of the jewels of the exhibition is the Virgin of Cumberland, by Rubens, that it took more than three years to the collector to acquire it, and the printed series entitled Iconography of illustrious men by Anton van Dyck, made for intellectuals, artists and politicians of the time.

It also highlights large format still-lifes, of nearly 3 meters high, as the titled Still Life by Jan van Kessel the Elder, that brings together elements such as flowers, fruits, vegetables and vases, fabric framed, with a magnificent twilight landscape.

From Rubens to Van Dyck will also have a space for immersion allowing the visitor to enter in a seventeenth-century Flemish workshop to learn how great painters worked, as well as several artistic techniques and materials used to create their works.

Landscapes, portraits, etchings and engravings, all of a exceptional quality made by the masters of Flemish painting, will be on display from Friday October 30 to 27 March at the Museo Nacional de San Carlos, located in Puente de Alvarado No . 50, Colonia Tabacalera, near Metro Revolucion.
