Urban Images come to Mexico, a combination of colors, shapes, concepts and ideas of posters

January 15, 2016

Canadian photographer John Parkes, specialized in Found Art inaugurated his exhibition Urban Images at Galería Torre del Reloj (Clock Tower Gallery) in Parque Lincoln.

With an abstract proposal, the exhibit is composed of 55 images inspired in posters placed in the streets of Polanco, Mexico City and Ottawa, Canada.

They are different urban collages located in poles, telephone booths and walls, that according to Parkes, reflect the concerns, values, interests, moral codes and, of course, the marketing of each region.

Thus, various elements are assembled naturally that when captured by the lens stand out for their colorful variety of forms, concepts and ideas, as in the same space a human figure can be seen, the face of a bear, the ad traces of a concert, or an advertisement of cigarettes.

Graphic artist considered that there are interesting differences between the streets of Canada and Mexico from its walls and posters, which are reflected in the photographs distributed on the ground floor and first floor of the building.

While in our country, posters or ads can be stripped or be one above the other, in Canada there is a law to regulate and place only in authorized areas.

"I was walking with my camera, looking at things differently. They are brief creations that one day are on the walls and the other no longer exist. When people look at my work sometimes I am surprised, because it tells me that they have never run into anything alike while walking, so I would say that next time they look with greater attention".

That is why urban photographer said that in the end, any pictures exist, because they are destroyed or covered with new posters, which make attractive the portrayed objects.

"For example, there is a series of photographs taken in the same place every two weeks for five years and they all look different," he said.

John Parkes began his career in 1999 when he took images in black and white from walls with posters of bands and bars in Toronto, Canada.

He has photographed walls in Toronto, Europe, Los Angeles and Mexico. His works have been exhibited at The Elaine Fleck Gallery in Toronto, where one of his pictures was recently part of the exhibition Top 100. Also his work was part of double and group exhibitions for eight years in this gallery.

He has also exhibited in The Perfect Exposure Gallery in Los Angeles and Yuri Lopez Kullins and Arte Visual Mexico galleries.

The photo exhibition Urban Images will remain until January 24 at Galería Torre del Reloj at Lincoln Park in Polanco, from Monday to Friday from 10:00 to 15:00 and 16:00 to 19:00. Saturday and Sunday from 10:00 to 15:00 and 16:00 to 18:00. Admission is free.
