January 30, 2016

Museo Espacio, built in the Macro Espacio para la cultura y las artes (Macro Space for Culture and Arts (MECA, for its acronym in Spanish) Aguascalientes, one of the cultural infrastructure greatest works in recent years, was inaugurated on Friday night January 29 as a new epicenter for art education, exhibitions, conservation, workshops and the approach to a new cultural life in the country central area.

Secretary of Culture, Rafael Tovar y de Teresa, inaugurated with Governor Carlos Lozano de la Torre this project built on 86 hectares in the great cultural space, where la Universidad de las Artes (University of Arts),  la Biblioteca (the Library), la Sala de Locomotoras (the Locomotives Hall), el Foro Trece de Convenciones (the Thirteen Forum Conventions), a multipurpose lounge and storage rooms are established.

During the event, where the first cooperation agreement was signed between the Ministry of Culture with a state government, Rafael Tovar y de Teresa said that Museo Espacio (Space Museum) continues the tradition of Aguascalientes as a decentralizing point of culture in the country.

He further explained that the signed agreement expresses the will of President Enrique Peña Nieto to strengthen national identity, protect our heritage and bring cultural goods and services to the entire population, which allowed only in 2015, a 100 million pesos federal investment for the state of Aguascalientes.

Many of the cultural precedents of our nation have came up in this entity, it was here where Victor Sandoval started the Casa de la Cultura (House of Culture) of Aguascalientes, where the publication of the magazine, Tierra Adentro (Inland) began and it is also the place of big announcements, such as the Premio Aguascalientes (Aguascalientes Prize), so the Museo Espacio (Space Museum) supports its cultural impact throughout our territory", said Rafael Tovar y de Teresa.

Governor Carlos Lozano de la Torre celebrated that this infrastructure will make of Aguascalientes a cultural destination at a national and international level, which will attract the best artists, curators, academics, various disciplines groups and specialists who will turn this new host into a multicultural and multigenerational meeting.

He stressed that together with the exhibition of Jannis Kounellis, the space is opened with the symposium The drama of the shape, where a manifesto about the vision of art will be launched from Mexico, with the participation of personalities like Norman Rosenthal, Denys Zacharopoulus, Marc Scheps, Marco Vallora, Christos Joachimides, José Jiménez, Marie-Laure Bernadac, Stephen Bann, José Luis Barrios, Adachiara Zevi and Guillermo Santamarina.

"This museum is a bridge to the past, a window to the present and a way to the future. A project like this one gives to culture a strategically importance of state as a boost for development and transformation of our society", said the state governor.

Prior to a tour of the exhibition Kounellis. Lightning over Mexico, the famous Greek exponent of Arte Povera, currently based in Italy, said that this exhibition, curated by Bruno Cora, follows a clearly pacifist line, taking advantage of the materials found in the old railroad to build both an esthetic and critical discourse.

"I am honored that my work opens a space like this one, because the opening of a museum is always a cause for celebration for men and culture", said Jannis Kounellis himself, who created original pieces for this exhibition.

Dulce Maria Rios Godoy, director of the Cultural Institute of Aguascalientes, finally said that this space will strengthen the cultural tradition of the state with a global vision, committed to bring art to a growing citizenry with a museography at an international level. "It's the beginning of a new and bright stage of culture with the advances of the XXI century".
