February 02, 2016

The exhibition, Land of hope by visual artist Yoko Ono, held at Museo Memoria y Tolerancia (Memory and Tolerance Museum) from February 2 to May 29, presented a selection of works of creator’s Instruction, dated from the last six decades, with which she aims to reveal the basic elements that define Ono's career.

At a press conference, the forerunner of Conceptual art, Experimental film and Performance, said she came to Mexico to bring peace. "We are in a time when we are all suffering from the violence, not only in Mexico, in the United States there are daily murders and it is said in the newspapers; this becomes insensitive because it happens all the time at every turn. I came here to bring peace, but that is something very strong to say and it will not happen immediately, but we can do it together", she explained.

The woman who in 1952 was the first to study philosophy at Gakushuin University in Tokyo, said she came to Mexico because she considered it was important. "I'm here to get together in a resurgence, we must stand, not sit, stand up is necessary at this time. [...] I think it's time to come together and think of something, I really feel I am with you and we can do something together", said the widow of John Lennon.

The creator, who was born in Japan in 1933, pointed out that words can mean many things, but more than words, the world needs action. "We have to say we do not need TV to people who are just sitting watching TV, because right now we must stand up together and I hope we can do it," Yoko Ono reiterated

Meanwhile, José Luis Martínez, head of International Affairs of the Ministry of Culture of the federal government, said that this project is supported not only in reaction to Yoko Ono’s celebrity, but the icon of cultural and political life of the sixties. "The Ministry of Culture is pleased to collaborate with the Museo Memoria y Tolerancia (Memory and Tolerance Museum)" he said.

On her berhalf, Linda Atach Zaga, director of the department of Temporary Exhibitions of the museum, said that Land of Hope is related to the values of this institution.

“The 16 pieces of Land of Hope tell events that have become history lessons. They spread messages of peace and hope able to cause changes and stimulate the participation of society”.

She noted that local Mexican accents were placed in some of the pieces on display, highlighting Map Piece and Arising, proposed works in which women of all ages are invited to submit a photograph of her look and a testimony of the harm done to her for being a woman.

The curator Gunnar B. Kvaran said that Ono's work is on exhibition based on her Instructions, showing more than 30. "Some of the instructions have been made and materialized in the exhibition space, with others we refer to the instruction of war time and other part has to do with reconstruction and salvation", he said.

In Land of hope, installations, projections and texts can be seen under the headings: Morning rays, The Riverbed; Play with confidence, Horizontal Memories, Ceiling painting; Instructions, Cut Piece, Helmets, Three mounds, The war ended, Invisible People, Sky TV, Imagine Peace, Map Piece, Mend Piece, Telephone in maze, Films, Bag Piece, Arising, Colour Painting and Wish Tree.

In addition to the indoor exhibition, there will be an outdoor exhibit in public and semi-public spaces of the city, placing works in advertising areas. Land of Hope will be open in the temporary exhibitions Hall of Museo Memoria y Tolerancia until May 29.
