February 04, 2016

Puebla, Pue.- With heritage and participation of Germany, Brazil, China, Spain, the Philippines, France, United States, Guatemala, India, Peru, Portugal and 21 Mexican museums and collections, the International Baroque Museum was inaugurated in the city of Puebla. It is the first interactive space that preserves and disseminates the art of the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries.

Designed by the Japanese Toyo Ito, this compound built with an investment from the federal and state governments as well as private initiative, was inaugurated by Rafael Tovar y de Teresa, head of the Ministry of Culture of the federal government, and state governor Rafael Moreno Valle

Mexico has been characterized as one of the countries with the largest baroque richness of the world, because it was the country where the Spanish and native cultures crossed, Culture Secretary said

The Baroque, he added, is one of the main international, cosmopolitan and universal cultural movements, not only by the different branches in which art, music, theater and architecture are expressed, but different territories covered by the Catholic world of those centuries.

The International Baroque Museum, which is part of the policy of cultural infrastructure that holds the government of President Enrique Peña Nieto, not only exhibits heritage works, but uses new technologies that will bring education and information to new audiences such as young people and children, in a language they are used to, Tovar y de Teresa said.

At the ceremony, also attended by Senator Javier Lozano, the Secretary of Culture stressed that this is one of the most significant architectural works in Mexico, Puebla in particular, "certainly one of the great baroque cities of the world”.

Meanwhile, Governor Rafael Moreno Valle explained that the building of the compound is an art work itself and it was essential to have museography, technology and heritage of other museums, foundations and collections to live up. This is, he said, the first interactive museum of international character that preserves and promotes the Baroque.

The new International Baroque Museum, of 18,000 square meters length, is considered one of the projects dedicated to classical, modern and contemporary Baroque, more ambitious in the history of Puebla, whose two-story building hosts permanent exhibition halls and even areas dedicated to science, nature and scientific experimentation; an auditorium, a terrace and an outdoor patio.

The compound opened with two exhibitions: Tornaviaje of the ship of China and The Baroque in Mexico, reflecting the commercial and cultural ties that united Europe, America and Asia, across the Pacific Ocean, and Baroque Maharajas, showing the splendor of the costumes of India.

Its permanent galleries are: Teatro Mundi (Mundi Theatre), Angelópolis, Sentimiento barroco (Baroque feeling), Pintura y escultura (Painting and sculpture), Letras barrocas, (Baroque lyrics), Deleitar y conmover (Delight and move), Artificios diluidos (Diluted Artifices) and Barroco contemporáneo (Contemporary Baroque), which offer a comprehensive view of the different art manifestations from its origins to the present day in an interactive, innovative and cutting-edge way.

The International Baroque Museum is located in Atlixcáyotl between the Instituto Tecnologico de Estudios Superiores Monterrey (ITESM, campus Puebla ) (ITESM, for its acronym in Spanish), and via Municipio Libre, south of the city of Puebla.
