The Ministry of Culture celebrates Miguel León-Portilla´s 90th anniversary with several activities

In order to celebrate the 90th anniversary of the historian Miguel León-Portilla, one of the greatest experts of ancient Mexico and the Nahuatl culture, in particular, the Ministry of Culture of the federal government, through various organizations and in collaboration with the local government of Mexico City and the Fondo de Cultura Económica (Culture Economic Fund, FCE, for its acronym in Spanish), will carry out throughout 2016 a series of activities that will count on the participation of renowned specialists and researchers including round tables discussion and analysis, book presentations, collective readings and special programs broadcast on radio and television.

 The program of activities has been designed with the purpose of celebrating the thought and work of who has won numerous prizes, including 28 honorary doctorates awarded by universities all over the world.

The National Institute of Anthropology and History (INAH, for its acronym in Spanish) will reissue one of the most recognized works of the honoree: Mexico Tenochtitlán: su espacio y tiempos sagrados (Mexico Tenochtitlan: sacred space and time), published for the first time in 1977, and will organize a round table about the studies on historian’s Códice Mendocino (Codex Mendocino).

On February 22, philosopher's date of birth, the Ministry of Culture will hold a campaign to highlight and promote the work done by the winner of the National Prize for Arts and Sciences 1981, with the broadcast of a special radio programs series produced by Radio Educación.

The activities will continue on March 19 through collective readings, La visión de los vencidos (The vision of the vanquished), one of the most representative books in the researcher's path, to be carry out in schools and reading rooms across the country.

 In September, there will be a round table-tribute with three special guests and the projection of a commemorative video within the activities of the 28th Anthropology and History International Book Fair (FILAH, for its acronym in Spanish)

 Also, under the FILAH, Dr. León-Portilla will participate in the launch of El Tesoro Mexicano (The Mexican Treasury), an unprecedented document about visions of nature between the old and the new world.

 The International Book Fair at the Zocalo, organized by the local government of Mexico City, will join the celebrations with a round table-tribute on October 15.

 The National Sound Archive will make available to the public a special podcast where you may listen to fragments of Leon-Portilla's work, which will also be available with special promotions at Educal Bookshops Network and Fondo de Cultura Economica, (FCE, for its acronym in Spanish)

The interview and photo capsule published in Correo del Libro will be promoted in audiovisual spaces and several social networks (http://www.correodellibro.com.mx/entrevista/portavoz-de-la-palabra-de-un-pueblo/) and also a Reading Club around his work will be organized at the Centro Cultural Elena Garro.
