Italian semiologist and writer Umberto Eco died at 84

Author of The Name of the Rose and Numero Zero (2015), the Italian writer Umberto Eco died at age 84 in Italy.

 Also a philosopher and a native from the Italian town of Alessandria, he was one of the most renowned twentieth century writers of novels such as The Name of the Rose, bestseller that gave rise to the film of the same name.

 In this regard, the Secretary of Culture, Rafael Tovar y de Teresa regreted the death of this great semiologist and philosopher, so he said on his Twitter account:

"I am deeply sorry about the death of Umberto Eco, writer, philosopher and universal educator".

 Author of over 56 essays, he wrote articles in the areas of semiotics, linguistics, esthetics and morality.

 It stands out, among his works, Foucault's Pendulum and Apocalyptic and Integrated, The Prague Cemetery, getting The name of the Rose should be translated into more than 50 languages with over 30 million copies sold worldwide.

 In 2000, Umberto Eco was awarded the Prince of Asturias Prize for Communication and Humanities, who in his latest novel - Number Zero- focused on the crisis in journalism from the history of a failed journal.

Other distinctions he won are: Gold Medal of Merit in Culture and Arts; Knight Grand Cross of the Order of Merit of the Italian Republic; Commander of the Order of Arts and Letters in France; Strega Prize and Médicis Prize, among others, besides being proposed for the Nobel Prize several times.
