During April and May outside the Tamayo Museum

Relive the experience of authentic Elizabethan theater

March 07, 2018

The architecture of the Tamayo Contemporary Art Museum and the surroundings of the Bosque de Chapultepec will be the setting for Shakespeare, Teatro en el Parque, a project that will take the public to the Elizabethan theater through a large portable stage, on which seven performances will be played from April to May.

Claudio Sodi, producer of this proposal, said in a press conference that their goal is that inhabitants and visitors of Mexico City appreciate the way of seeing and coming to the theater of the 16th and 17th centuries, enjoying plays based on texts by one of the geniuses of universal literature: William Shakespeare.

“Some of the performances are aimed at children and young people and others at an adult audience. We believe that the project that took us two years to complete will allow us to bring children and young people closer to a friendly and fun theater”, he explained.

The producer of Magnífico Entertainment, announced the productions to be presented: Romeo y Julieta de bolsillo (Pocket Romeo and Juliet); Algo de un tal Shakespeare (Something of a certain Shakespeare); Mendoza; Macbeth; ¿Qué con Quique Quinto? (What about Quique Quinto?) La sombra del bardo (The shadow of the bard); and Yo tenía un Ricardo hasta que Ricardo lo mató (I had a Richard until Richard killed him).

“These are adaptations and reinterpretations that will allow the spectator to approach the work of the British author with a new air and come out with a different vision of his texts and archetypes”, Sodi said.

In the esplanade of the Tamayo Contemporary Art Museum there will be an open-air stage with a capacity of 500 people, 18 meters in diameter, 9 meters high and a three-level front designed by Adrián Martínez Frausto.

“To make this stage we wanted to respect the way in which theater was done in Shakespeare's time, but to have it perfectly adapted in the contemporary, not to feel a reproduction or a bit corny replica of Elizabethan theater”, said the young designer.

He added that when the stage was set up on the esplanade of the Museo Tamayo, it was intended to be a kind of assembly that had a set of transparencies and dialogue with the pieces outside the building.

Regarding the interior, it has three fronts with two levels. “The idea is that there should be a very close relationship between the audience and the stage and actors. The interaction between the artist and the audience will always be wonderful”, he said.

Jacobo Márquez, producer of Lado be, said that Shakespeare, Teatro en el Parque is a replica of projects such as La Corrala del Mitote, the New York program Shakespeare in the Park and London's Shakespeare Globe.

“We think it's very interesting that inside a park is created a theater and within it Shakespeare is dramatized, so we thought Chapultepec would be the best space. This is the first season so we expect a lot more to follow”, he said.

In order to ensure that Elizabethan theater is enjoyed absolutely by everyone, Teatro en el Parque will offer special performances with sign language interpreters during the season. This will apply both to works aimed at children's audiences and those focused on teenagers and adults.

Also, during Easter Week special performances will be held from Wednesday to Sunday, at 11 am and 1 pm, suitable for the whole family. At 7 pm there will be plays aimed at teenagers and adults.

In order to celebrate the children their day on Monday April 30, and teachers theirs on May 15, Pocket Romeo y Julieta will be held at 11 am and Something of a certain Shakespeare at 13 pm.

“During April and May we will be on the esplanade, with a theater that houses 500 people with three different sections, a general one where the entrance will be free and two more that will have cost”.

“We believe that Shakespeare, Teatro en el parque will reach many people, we have a capacity throughout the season to receive between 50,000 and 60,000 people with about 90 activities”, said Claudio Sodi.

This show will be presented on the esplanade of the Tamayo Contemporary Art Museum thanks to the support of the Department of Culture of the Federal Government, through the National Institute of Fine Arts (INBA, for its acronym in Spanish), the National Theater Coordination and the Mexico City Theater System.

The season will begin on Wednesday April 4 with the presentation of Pocket Romeo and Juliet directed by Alonso Íñiguez, at 11 am; Something of a certain Shakespeare by Adrián Vázquez, at 1 pm; and Mendoza by Juan Carrillo at 7 pm
