With 50 movies in the video on demand system

The Éléphant platform arrives in Mexico: the memory of Québec cinema

March 16, 2018

Ten years after the existence of the platform Éléphant: The Memory of Québec cinema, 50 movies  will be available in Mexico today, fully restored and with Spanish subtitles.

The launch of this video on demand platform will be accompanied by a screening of three movies at the Cineteca Nacional: The Death of a Woodcutter, Réjeanne Padovani and The Orders, to be presented on March 15, 16 and 17, respectively.

At a press conference, Stéphanie Allard-Gomez, Québec's general delegate in Mexico, said the launch was a sign of the nearly 40 years of strong cultural ties between the two countries, where cinema is one of the central themes of the richness of this cooperation.

Beginning on March 15, Éléphant: The Memory of Québec cinema will reach Mexico and Latin America with a total of 50 movies subtitled in Spanish and a showcase of classic Québec cinema at the Cineteca Nacional.

Marie-José Raymond, founder of Éléphant, said that to date the platform has more than 250 movies available in English and French and now has a selection in Spanish. The titles reflect what Quebec is, an original country with great wealth, and at the same time are an invitation to visit it.

Claude Fournier, co-director of Éléphant, said that this platform is a philanthropic project funded entirely by the Québecor company, which seeks to turn users into fans of Québec cinema.

He noted that while the platform is starting with 50 movies restored with Spanish subtitling, another 75 are already in preparation, for a total of 125 movies that will be available in Mexico and Spanish-speaking countries in just over a year.

Éléphant was created 10 years ago to make Québec feature films accessible and thus prevent the disappearance of this heritage, which specialists in that country call "cinematographic Alzheimer".

Since 1945, over 1,200 feature films have been produced in Quebec, of which 250 have been restored from the negative and digitized and are now available worldwide with this video-on-demand system through the website elephantcinema.quebec.

Those interested can enjoy works such as Gatuperios by Jean Beaudin, Last refuge by Denyse Benoit, Once Upon a Time in the East by André Brassard, Cape Storm by Michel Langlois, Karmina by Gabriel Pelletier, Red eyes by Yves Simoneau and The Saracen by Paul Tana, among many others.

The screening of the three Québec movies at the Cineteca Nacional begins on March 15 with Gilles Carle's 1973 movie,  The Death of a Woodcutter, which will feature the lead actress Carole Laure and her husband, musician Lewis Furey, composer and one of Gilles Carle's performers.

This Friday, March 16, Mexican audiences will be able to enjoy Réjeanne Padovani (1973) by Denys Arcand, while on Saturday, March 17, The Orders by Michel Brault (1974) will be shown.
