April 08, 2018

The exhibition Making the body was inaugurated this weekend at the Centro Cultural Tijuana (Cecut, for its acronym in Spanish). This is an exhibition that talks about the life trajectory of Rogelio Cuellar as a photographer of the leading figures of Mexican painting in the second half of the twentieth century, and a look at the studies and work of the painters of the Ruptura (Breakaway generation) and their later epigones.

María Cristina García Cepeda, Secretary of Culture, led the opening at El Cubo in the Cecut. The exhibition is curated by María Luisa Passarge and Jaime Moreno Villarreal.

The exhibition showcases over 100 original works, including paintings, drawings, engravings and sculptures by more than 80 Mexican artists born or naturalised in the 20th century. It also includes over a hundred portraits that Rogelio Cuellar took of these artists whose work is part of the exhibition.

Painting and drawing prevail, but there is also sculpture and collage. Rogelio Cuellar’s photographs stand out as a journey through time where the young Francisco Toledo dialogues with the young Fernando Macotela; Rufino Tamayo and Alberto Gironella pose in the fullness of their 50s and Gilberto Aceves Navarro stares at the photographer who spies on his sketches.

María Cristina García Cepeda, toured this exhibition together with Pedro Ochoa, director of the Cecut and narrated by Rogelio Cuéllar himself, who was described by the Secretary of Culture as "a photographer who has moved from documentary images to artistic creation, who explores technique and color, an alchemist who translates realities to give them life beyond his time".

For the director of the Cecut, this is "one of the most important exhibitions of 2018 not only in the city but also in the northwest of the country".

The exhibition represents a journey through the history of 20th century Mexican art with works by authors born or living in Mexico, beginning with Balmori Santos and Rufino Tamayo, and including Alice Rahon, Leonora Carrington, Juan Soriano, Manuel Felguérez, José Luis Cuevas, Francisco Toledo, Sergio Hernández and Demián Flores.
