Against Silence All Voices, epicenter of the Hispano-American documentary

With the aim of calling documentary filmmakers from Latin America to present their work and to analyze, conceptualize and discuss the documentary genre, the 10th edition of the Hispanic American Independent Film and Video Meeting: Against silence all voices will be held. 

The details of the meeting - which will take place from April 12 to 21 in 130 locations in Mexico City and the interior of the country - were announced at a press conference held on Tuesday morning, April 10, at the Mexican Institute of Cinematography (Imcine, for its acronym in Spanish).

The participants were: Cristián Calónico Lucio, general coordinator of the meeting; Ana Lila Altamirano Ahedo, director of Cultural Cinematographic Promotion of the Mexican Institute of Cinematography (Imcine); Ximena Perujo Cano, head of the Programming Unit of the General Directorate of Cinematographic Activities of the UNAM; Francisco Mata Rosas, general coordinator of dissemination of the Autonomous Metropolitan University and Jesús Benítez García, Director of Cultural Promotion of Tlalpan.

This year, 170 documentaries will be screened in eight categories: 23 in Social Movements and Citizen Organization, 22 in Human Rights, 18 in Indigenous Peoples, 20 in Women, 15 in Borders, Migrations and Exiles, 24 in Everyday Life and Social Change, 25 in Environment and Sustainable Development, and 23 in Art and Society.

The films come from 34 countries, including: Germany, Argentina, Austria, Belgium, Bolivia, Brazil, Cuba, Chile, China, Colombia, Costa Rica, España, United States, France, Guatemala, Honduras, India, Iceland, Italy, Mexico, Peru, El Salvador, Western Sahara, Switzerland, Uruguay and Venezuela.

Ana Lila Altamirano highlighted that the festival will screen eight productions made with the support of the Fund for Quality Film Production: El charro de Toluquilla by José Villalobos Romero, Derecho de playa by Jorge Díaz Sánchez, Etiqueta No rigurosa by Cristina Herrera Bórquez, El remolino by Laura Herrero Garvín.

In addition to Margarita by Bruno Santamaría, El maíz en tiempos de guerra by Alberto Cortés, Batallas íntimas by Lucía Gajá and Un exilio: película familiar by Juan Francisco Urrusti.

The program also includes 20 performances with the presence of the director, so that a dialogue with the audience can be established at the end of the performance.

Participants: Alberto Cortés, director of El Maíz en Tiempos de Guerra (Mexico), which will be performed on Wednesday, April 18, at 8 p.m., in the Julio Bracho Hall of the University Cultural Center; and on Sunday, April 22, at 8 p.m., in the Tlalpan's esplanade.

Also Leo Contreras Barahona, director of Cheques Matta (Chile), which will be presented on April 13 at 8 p.m. in the Carlos Monsiváis Hall of the University Cultural Center. And Guerrero (one of the main characters is Mario Vergara), which will be performed on Sunday April 15 at 5 p.m. at the Cinematógrafo del Chopo.

Against silence all voices will host the First National Meeting of Alternative Film Exhibition Circuits, to be held on April 18, 19 and 20. Its objective is to open dialogue and work on strengthening alternative exhibition circuits that reach the millions of Mexicans who, due to geographical or economic issues, do not have access to commercial cinemas, said Cristián Calónico.

This project is being organized by Voces Contra el Silencio (Voices against silence) and the Mexican Institute of Cinematography and the organizers of these spaces will participate in this event with the idea of forming an alternative network of exhibition for national cinema. This event will be held at the Universidad Autónoma Metropolitana-Xochimilco, the Cineteca Nacional and the Estudios Churubusco.

The program of the meeting also includes a series of parallel activities, among which the following stand out: Outdoor screenings in Tlalpan, Iztapalapa, Cuauhtémoc and Xochimilco, which will be held from April 13 to 22 at 8 p.m.

The special series 1968 Student Movement in Mexico will be held at the Villa Olímpica Cinema on April 18, 19 and 20 at 4:30 pm and 7:00 pm.

A series of round tables focused on the migration processes that will be held at the Centro Cultural España on April 17 and 18 at 6 p.m.

There will also be working sessions on documentaries and violence, and documentaries and social movements to be held at the Autonomous Metropolitan University, Unidad Xochimilco, on Friday April 13 at 10 am and 12:30 pm respectively.

The 10th edition of the Hispanic American Independent Film and Video Meeting: Against silence all voices starts on Thursday, April 12 at 8 p.m. at the Centro Cultural Universitario with the screening of the documentary Ayotzinapa, el paso de la tortuga directed by Enrique García Meza and produced by TV-UNAM and Guillermo del Toro.
