Presentation of the 2018 Call for the International Carlos Fuentes Prize for Literary Creation in Spanish Language

April 11, 2018

The call for the 4th edition of the Carlos Fuentes International Prize for Literary Creation in the Spanish Language was presented on Wednesday April 11 by the Department of Culture and the National Autonomous University of Mexico, as part of the 90th birth anniversary of the Mexican writer, which will be celebrated on November 11.

María Cristina García Cepeda, Secretary of Culture, announced the details of the call that will be open until July 17, with the presence of Silvia Lemus, widow of Carlos Fuentes, Enrique Graue Wiechers, rector of the National Autonomous University of Mexico, Jorge Gutiérrez Vázquez, Undersecretary of Cultural Diversity and Promotion of Reading of the Department of Culture and Jorge Volpi, coordinator of dissemination.

The head of Culture said that this award honors the trajectory and legacy of an author who contributed with his work, thought and vision of the world, based on the strength of culture, his view of Mexico from our identity and deep roots.

García Cepeda recalled that in 2012, Mario Vargas Llosa, with whom the Mexican writer had a friendship that summed up the Latin American spirit of both authors, received the award. Later, the prize was given to the Nicaraguan author Sergio Ramírez and the Mexican poet Eduardo Lizalde.

The award-winning authors share Carlos Fuentes's intellectual and creative concerns: his interest in Latin America, his influence on generations after his own, and the variety of literary genres that he cultivated with mastery, he was a man of letters as broad as human imagination and reflection can be, said the secretary of Culture.

He is one of the emblematic intellectuals of Latin America, creator of a deep work that spread over several genres: essay, fiction, theatre, film scripts and opera, he gave us luminous works in which he reflected on his historical moment and the future, she added.

Enrique Graue Wiechers, rector of the UNAM, welcomed the fact that this fourth edition will serve to disseminate once again the legacy of Carlos Fuentes as a man who built part of the contemporary cultural identity of our country and reminded his novel The most transparent region, published in 1958.

Silvia Lemus said that on November 11, Carlos Fuentes would have celebrated his 90th birthday and therefore praised that this award is a worthy reminder of his name, but above all an inspiration for the authors who, like him, build their literature with passion, fire, power and identity.

"I am very excited and grateful to the institutions and happy about the enthusiasm that Carlos Fuentes's work continues to arouse among readers, especially young people”.

Jorge Volpi, coordinator of Cultural Dissemination at UNAM, explained that the university will carry out an extensive program of activities to involve young people in this important anniversary.

The Department of Culture has prepared a program to honor the legacy of Carlos Fuentes among the new generations with panel discussions and talks by specialists who will analyze the presence of this author in Latin American and universal literature.
