The thirty-first Alarcón Conferences, to be held from May 13 to 19 in the Guerrero towns of Taxco, Chilpancingo, Iguala and Ixcateopan, will have the Afro-Mexican culture as main theme, counting for the first time with the presence of a guest country of honor: Ivory Coast.

In a press conference held in the Adamo Boari Hall of the Palace of Fine Arts, Mauricio Leyva Castrejón, head of the Secretariat of Culture of the State of Guerrero, reported that the meeting dedicated to the work of Juan Ruiz de Alarcón y Mendoza, a Mexican who stood out in the Spanish Golden Age, will include 69 artistic activities such as stage and dance proposals, exhibitions, workshops, book presentations and concerts.

He said that the organization of the Alarcon Conferences decided this year to dedicate it to the Afro-Mexican culture, since the state of Guerrero has one of the most important centers of Afro-descendant population, particularly in the Costa Chica, one of the richest areas that make up the cultural diversity of the region.

"We seek to defend a face, a face from the south of the country that make up Oaxaca, Chiapas and Guerrero. Mexico's 19th century history was built by the mulatto, the indigenous, with an inclusive vision. That's why we are looking for alliances with nations that are giving a lot of positive things like the Ivory Coast," said the state official.

Among the special activities for this edition of the gathering created in 1987, the presence of the state of Tlaxcala with its puppet theater stands out. Also the presentation of the Philharmonic Orchestra of Acapulco in the Cacahuamilpa Caves, a posthumous tribute to the writer José Dimayuga, who died at the end of 2017 and whose work, La forma exacta de percibir las cosas (The exact way of perceiving things) will be performed.

"In a period of eight days there will be music, dance and theater displays, an exhibition of Ivory Coast in Casa Borda and another one of the National Museum of Popular Culture entitled Tierra Negra (Black Land) by the photographer Maya Goded, in the Viceroyalty Museum. Also, round tables will be held and the presentation of the volumes of the Alarcón Library co-published with the UNAM," added Leyva Castrejón.

She pointed out that the Alarcón Conferences are already one of the most important festivals, and they are on their way to becoming an international event. "This first alliance with the Ivory Coast honors, distinguishes and lays the foundation for strong commercial relations between the state of Guerrero and them”.

The director of the National Theater Company, Enrique Singer, informed that within the event, Martín Zapata will be awarded the Juan Ruíz de Alarcón National Dramaturgy Prize, the most important of its kind, which consists of 500,000 pesos and is awarded by INBA and the Government of Guerrero.
