May 12, 2018

The masterclass given by Canadian decorator and production designer Shane Vieau, who won an Oscar for his work on Guillermo del Toro's The Shape of Water, is a must-see at the Durango New Mexican Film Festival 2018, to be held from May 16-20.

Shane has collaborated with directors such as Tim Burton on Big Eyes, Tom McCarthy on the Oscar-winning Spotlight and Terry Gilliam on The Imaginary of Dr. Parnassus. He will share an intimate look at the creative process of the sets of The Shape of Water. The class will be free of charge and will take place on Saturday May 19 at 12:30 pm at the Fine Arts Institute of the Juarez University of the State of Durango.

In its first edition as an independent festival, the duranguense event brings a selection of seven recently produced Mexican feature films that have won the Guadalajara and Morelia festivals, as well as 10 local talent duranguense feature films.

In an interview with the Secretary of Culture, the director of this festival, Christian Sida Valenzuela, details the program of this festival whose objective is to promote and disseminate quality Mexican cinema.

"The festival has concentrated on making a selection of new directors and also new film proposals, and the selected movies are backed by important awards," he said.

The list of the official selection of feature films begins with Los adioses by director Natalia Beristain, who received the audience award at the Morelia International Film Festival a year ago.

This is followed by Oso Polar, Marcelo Tobar's third production, and the first Mexican movie made with iPhone, which in the same edition of the Michoacan event received the award for best feature film.

Rubén Gutiérrez will show his debut feature Piérdete entre los muertos (official selection of the Rotterdam Film Festival in 2018), as well as Raúl Rico and Eduardo Giralt Brun with Los débiles, who this year won the award for best feature film at Ficunam.

Restos de viento by Jimena Montemayor (winner of Best Feature Film at the Guadalajara Film Festival, 2018), Rush hour by Luciana Kaplan (Best Documentary at the Morelia Film Festival, 2017) and Ayer maravilla fui by Gabriel Mariño (new director award at the Morelia Film Festival, 2017), close the competition list.

The festival will open with the screening of the movie Solo con tu pareja, Alfonso Cuarón's debut feature, starring Claudia Ramírez, festival's special guest. The showing will be on Wednesday 16 at 7:30 p.m.

From May 16-20, the independent gathering organized by the civil association will be held. Among other things, the program will include special showings, talks, workshops, exhibitions and the screening of the movies that compete for the national feature film, national short film and the section Made in Durango.

The program also includes the premiere of the short film Desde una ventana, directed by Sebastián Hiriart and produced by the Durango-born Bildo Saravia; in addition, the exhibition Y el Ariel de Oro is for... that brings together 20 of the posters of the winning movies to the 1947 first edition of the Ariel.

The organizer said that all activities will be free and the Revueltas CORE Center is the main headquarters this year. The complete program, as well as the list of movies and short films in competition, can be consulted at www.cinemexicanodurango.org.
