Mexico and Canada announce a million Canadian dollars fund for series co-production

During the opening of the third edition of the 2018 Market, Industry, Film and Audiovisual (MICA) meeting, on Tuesday, June 5, Mexico and Canada announced a million Canadian dollars fund to be used for the development of series co-production.

Jorge Sanchez, general director of the Mexican Institute of Cinematography (Imcine, for its acronym in Spanish) and Valerie Creighton, president and CEO of the Canada Media Fund announced this alliance, where each of these organizations will contribute 500,000 Canadian dollars.

The ceremony was attended by María Cristina García Cepeda, Secretary of Culture; Jean-Stephan Piché, Under-Secretary of Cultural Affairs at the Ministry of Canadian Heritage; Chantal Chastenay, Deputy Chief of the Canadian Embassy in Mexico; Alejandro Pelayo, Director of the Cineteca Nacional; and Yiselle Ibarra, Director General of MICA.

Secretary of Culture, Maria Cristina García Cepeda celebrated MICA has been the setting for the announcement of this collaboration agreement between Mexico and Canada for the series co-production, endorsing the commitment of the Department of Culture to national cinematography, through organizations such as Imcine, the Film Training Center, the Cineteca Nacional and the Churubusco Studios.

"We celebrate together today the third edition of the Market, Industry, Film and Audiovisual, a gathering of film professionals who share experiences and strategies with directors, scriptwriters and producers from Mexico and worldwide," she said.

The head of Culture welcomed the Canadian presence, which joins MICA as Guest of Honor, to strengthen ties and create this synergy for the benefit of international film markets, such as the agreement with the Canada Media Fund that will strengthen collaboration in the development of projects.

"We are living in times of transformation, of new paradigms in arts, in the production and consumption of audiovisual goods, which are the engine of conventional and digital cultural revolutions, regardless of borders”, she said.

The Department of Culture, said García Cepeda, assumes this time of transformations and promotes the development of the national audiovisual industry, once cinema is an engine of cultural and economic development, a window that allows us to learn more about human beings.

Valerie Creighton pointed out that these funds will be used to finance the co-production of fiction, documentary and animation series for television and digital platforms. Meanwhile, Jorge Sánchez welcomed the third edition of MICA, which seeks to consolidate its position as a meeting and reflection point for the Mexican and Latin-American film community in 2018.

She said that MICA, which will be held from June 5-9 at the Cineteca Nacional, is not only a space to learn about the audiovisual industry's projects, but also a place to discuss the current situation of filmmaking.

The director of Imcine highlighted that for the first time MICA has a Guest of Honor Country and that over these five days, through working groups, business meetings, master classes and workshops, the challenges faced by the creative industries will be addressed.

Finally, Jean-Stéphen Piché, Under-Secretary for Cultural Affairs at the Ministry of Canadian Heritage, considered that the implementation of MICA is a step forward in the productive relationship between Canada and Mexico and that both countries share values and are natural partners, hence the importance of deepening friendship and strengthening collaboration.

Until June 9, MICA will be held at the Cineteca Nacional with several activities: business meetings, talks, master classes, book presentations and demonstrations of the opportunities for production and exhibition, as well as support for the development of audiovisual products.
