MICA 2018 analyzes audiovisual series producers´work

Audiovisual series producers' creation was discussed in a talk on the afternoon of Friday, June 8 as part of Mercado, Industria, Cine y Audiovisual (MICA) 2018, a space for meeting and collaboration between the Mexican and international film industry, through 5 days of activities including market gatherings, master classes and workshops.

The event was attended by Femke Wolting, Dutch producer and director known for her work on Last Hijack (2014) and More Human Than Human (2018); Kyzza Terrazas, creator and scriptwriter of the series Aquí en la tierra (Here on Earth) and producers and writers Patricia Arriaga Jordán and Gabriel Ripstein.

The Mexican panelists agreed that we need writers for dramatized series in our country, despite the boom of these audiovisual works on several platforms.

"There are soap opera writers, some film writers, but we have the curse of the soap opera and this idea of some writers that cinema is superior to television when in reality they are two different things," said Patricia Arriaga.

According to Juana Inés's production company, the dramatized series is moved by a central question that involves a series of characters and is the development of those characters in the story.

"It's not a plot that throws characters and situations and that's a fundamental difference with soap operas. An important aspect is that the dramatized series raises questions that have to do with the reality of the audience it is aimed at”.

Alonso Aguilar Castillo, director of innovation at Televisa and debate moderator of the discussion table, highlighted that we are in what has been called the platinum era of dramatized television with over 500 new shows per year and the production at this time of 45 tv series in Mexico.

The term showrunner, which is often used in the United States and was also addressed, begins to be used in our country but does not yet appear in the credits of a tv series.

"It refers to the author who has the creative vision of his characters and the story he wants to tell, he can be a chief writer who gets involved even in postproduction processes," explained Patricia Arriaga, who recently finished the production of the tv series La Malinche.

Kyzza Terrazas considered that he prefers the term creator because he is involved in the creative decisions of a tv series although he does not need to be on the set all the time.

He recognized that he is a new writer in the world of tv series, since Aquí en la tierra (Here on Earth) represents his first incursion into the format, as an adaptation of the feature film Deficit.

Gabriel Ripstein spoke of the importance of being clear about the starting point of a tv series before discussing it with the studios and the aspects that have to do with intellectual property rights and who the last owner of the audiovisual product will be.

In her speech, Femke Wolting highlighted the differences with the European model, in which there is a wide diversity of public and funded television, which offers another way of understanding commercial television, as it has a hybrid of very strong public channels.

Created by the Mexican Institute of Cinematography (Imcine, for its acronym in Spanish) and with the support of the Berlin Film Festival, the European Film Market (EFM) and for the first time, the Mexican Academy of Film Arts and Sciences (AMACC), MICA 2018 will culminate on June 9.
