Commemorating half a century of the National Museum of San Carlos

Celebration of the Academy of Arts 50th anniversary and the opening of the exhibition Evocaciones

The Academy of Arts celebrated its 50 anniversary with a commemorative event and the opening of the exhibition Evocaciones on Tuesday, June 12, at the National Museum of San Carlos.

The acts were headed by the Secretary of Culture, María Cristina García Cepeda, who was accompanied by the General Director of the National Institute of Fine Arts (INBA), Lidia Camacho; the General Director of Educational and Cultural Cooperation of the Department of Foreign Affairs, José Luis Martínez; the current President of the Academy of Arts, the architect Mario Schjetnan and the academic secretary, Louise Noelle Grass.

The Academy is a meeting point, a society of knowledge and artistic and theoretical exchange where creation and memory, proposal and reflection, ideas and history coexist. It is the communion and diversity of ideas that enrich the world and foster understanding and agreement, the permanent dialogue with the past, the constant criticism, the reflection on the present to open paths towards the future, said Maria Cristina Garcia Cepeda.

She pointed out that in these 50 years, the Academy has been a voice of the country's thought, being a project that was born to honor the creators, academics and professionals of the arts of Mexico, to promote their important contribution to culture, and recalled the diplomat, historian and essayist José Luis Martínez Rodríguez as the promoter of the Academy.

Ambassador José Luis Martinez pointed out that all the details of the creation of the Academy of Arts and the San Carlos Museum were supported by his father, José Luis Martínez, since the Academy's creation decree and its rules, after consulting 18 founding members. He added that from the beginning, the main functions of the Academy were to advise public and private bodies on the stimulation of artistic creation, the safeguarding of cultural property and the promotion and research of arts.

According to the academic secretary of the Academy of the Arts, Louise Noelle Grass, the long list of members tells us of a half century marked by the creation and dedication of its members. "In addition to the several activities and actions in defense of heritage in which the academics have participated, they show the commitment of each and every one of them.”

For her part, the General Director of INBA, Lidia Camacho, celebrated the work of the Academy founded by Presidential Decree in 1966, with the vocation of bringing together in a collegiate body the most distinguished creators, as well as the theoreticians of history and art criticism.

 With the purpose of celebrating five decades of the National Museum of San Carlos, the exhibition Evocaciones was opened. National Museum of San Carlos. 50th anniversary.

They are five decades of exhibiting the ideals and tastes of different periods, the historical customs and episodes, the allegorical scenes and the themes and images of mysticism, mythology, literature and legends. Fifty years of building artistic bridges that cross distances and bring Mexico closer to the world, said the Secretary of Culture, Maria Cristina García Cepeda.

The president of the Board of the Museum, Miguel Aleman Velasco, highlighted the collection of the building composed of 2 thousand 21 pieces that go through the styles of the Gothic, Renaissance, Baroque, Mannerism, Neoclassical, Romanticism, to the European avant-garde of the twentieth century.

Also, he stressed the contributions of the Board, which allowed the renovation of the rooms, lighting, façades, the operation of the lift, the equipment and the modernization of services.

Also present at the opening were the director of the National Museum of San Carlos, Carmen Gaitán and the curator of the exhibition, Ana Garduño. The exhibition is made up of over 200 works, including paintings, sculptures, engravings and drawings, from the collection and from pieces lent by venues such as the National Museum of Art (Munal), the Franz Mayer, and the Academy of San Carlos.

The exhibition includes pieces by the Italian Jacopo Carrucci, El Pontormo; the Spanish Francisco de Zurbarán; the German Lucas Cranach, as well as the French Jean-Baptiste Camille Corot, among other great artists. The European art collection of the National Museum of San Carlos is one of the most important collections not only in Mexico, but in Latin America.
