June 26, 2018

The collection of clothing and textiles, as well as documentary material, painting, photography and graphics of painter Diego Rivera can be appreciated for the first time in a journey through the life and personality of the most famous of the national muralists.

The exhibition Diego Rivera. Genius, figure and silhouette will be opened on June 27 and will be on view until September 23 at Diego Rivera and Frida Kahlo’s House-Studio Museum.

An academic program will be available as part of the exhibition. The opening will be entertained with the performance CuerpoMural, directed, created and performed by the Brazilian artist Odailso Berté, accompanied by Carmen Ixchel Maya.

The exhibit will show the objects closest to his body: clothing, shoes, textiles and accessories that belong to the permanent collection of the site that are the subject of research and restoration by the National Center for Conservation and Registration of Artistic Heritage Furniture of the National Institute of Fine Arts (INBA).

In addition, there are photographs with a high documentary and environmental value that are rarely exhibited, accompanied by caricatures that show the controversial public and intellectual life of the artist with his works.

Luis Rius Caso, director of Diego Rivera and Frida Kahlo’s House-Studio Museum, added that the public will notice that "clothing is never neutral" and in the case of Diego "it says a lot".

So "sometimes we will have him with his look as a painter with the right to dress as he wishes. Sometimes thin as when he painted the murals in Detroit, and sometimes impeccably dressed as his last wife dressed him. At each stage "his body and clothes are saying different things".

He mentioned that the curator of the exhibition, Renato Camarillo Duque, got wonderful paintings, including Lucila and the Judas, a work lent by the Department of Finance.

The exhibition aims to "rescue textiles as a historical document by contextualizing a character in his time, space and body".

For his part, Camarillo Duque reiterated that the exhibition's line of work "is clothing, in which the artist's clothing is reviewed as a historical document".

The aim is "to invite people to look at these objects as pieces that reveal information and symbolism, which have traces that cannot be found anywhere else. They are unique pieces”, he said.

It should be pointed out that “this collection has been in storage for 30 years. They are exhibited to the public for the first time with the intention of observing details, such as clothing, technology, historical evidence, as paint or traces of its construction and manufacture".

Duque praised the restoration work of INBA's National Center for the Conservation and Registration of the Artistic Furniture Heritage, which took 8 to 9 months.

"With a unique selection, it is also a question of combining, of making a collection of outfits that are coherent based on historical documents such as photographs or some texts that talk about Diego's clothes, combining color with texture".

The intention is that the public will have interesting information about Rivera. "From the garments we can see the evolution of Diego's silhouette in its evolution over time; the quality of the costumes he had, the origin of the fabrics, the color of the textures of the cashmeres, the shoes, among other interesting things”.

The exhibition will be divided into six sections: Genius and figure: the origins, where the beginnings of the Barrientos family in Guanajuato will be addressed, their arrival in Mexico City and their incursion into the San Carlos academy.

I, the painter, Diego and his brush, will recreate a daily scene in the muralist's studio and his costumes will be appreciated.

Through the short film Diego Rivera. Portrait of a Painter, which will be projected in the section Intimate Diego, describes his prolific artistic activity with images of the period filmed in 1952.

The section Diego according to Frida. Painting with letters will allow you to listen to the text written by the painter to celebrate the 50th anniversary of Rivera's artistic career, in the voice of maestro José Luis Ibáñez.
