June 26, 2018

As part of Danzatlan. International Dance Festival, the Hubbard Street Dance Chicago company will be presented in Mexico with the premiere of the piece Decadance/Chicago, by acclaimed Israeli choreographer Ohad Naharin.

Glenn Edgerton, Hubbard Street Dance artistic director, said he was very excited and described the moment as a dream for the company, to be able to perform in such an important festival and in a city like Mexico, so full of culture.

A program has been prepared with three choreographies, in which 15 of its 16 dancers will participate for his debut in Mexico which will take place on July 9 at the Teatro de la Ciudad Esperanza Iris.

Concerning Decadance/Chicago, he said that it is a piece that plays with the idea of decadence and dance in that American city in a special collage made for Hubbard Street Dance and in which Ohad Naharin mixes several works from his repertoire, including his emblematic work Minus 16, in which a soundtrack with mambo, techno, traditional Israeli music and the seductive voice of Dean Martin, accompany unstoppable and wild sequences of dancers.

This work, Glenn Edgerton added, is based on Gaga, which, more than a style, is a language of movement based on sensations, so it is an individual dance, more sentimental than intellectual, which is based on the imagination and impulses in the body, so there are no limits in terms of interpretation and creativity.

In addition to the premiere of Decadance/Chicago by Ohad Naharin, a choreographer considered to be an innovator of contemporary dance, Hubbard Street Dance will present in Mexico the pieces Grace Engine by Crystal Pite and Lickety-Split by the Spaniard Alejandro Cerrudo.

Grace Engine, said the company's artistic director, is an athletic and modern choreography, a kind of crossover of shapes and styles, while Lickety-Split is a light-hearted work, with beautiful music by Venezuelan American composer Devendra Banhart, with lines closer to ballet.

Each of the pieces that Hubbard Street Dance Chicago will present are, according to Glenn Edgerton, great but different from each other, as each choreographer has given them their own voice, which makes them unique.

Por otro lado, celebró que la compañía pueda llegar a nuestro país en este momento de tensión que se vive en la relación entre Estados Unidos y México, para ayudar a curar las rupturas entre los dos países a través del arte y el intercambio cultural.

On the other hand, he welcomed the fact that the company is able to reach our country at this time of tension in the relationship between the United States and Mexico, to help heal the ruptures between the two countries through art and cultural exchange.

Hubbard Street Dance Chicago, which emerged in 1977, is one of the most original proposals in the contemporary genre in the United States and has been directed by Glenn Edgerton since 2009.

It is an international company with dancers from Canada, Germany, Spain and the United States with ballet training but also from other genres such as modern and contemporary dance, jazz and hip hop.

Although Hubbard Street Dance Chicago does not currently have Mexican dancers, Gleen Edgerton assured that it is an open company, so he does not rule out the possibility of hiring some of the best exponents of dance in our country and as part of his visit, the artistic director will offer a master class in Mexico.

Mexican audiences will be able to enjoy the work of Hubbard Street Dance Chicago in the choreographic show that will be presented on July 9 at 8:30 p.m. at the Teatro de la Ciudad Esperanza Iris, where tickets cost between $100 and $400.

It should be noted that this presentation will take place as part of Danzatlán. International Dance Festival that will take place from July 7-15, which will also feature Les Ballets Jazz de Montreal, São Paulo Companhia de Dança, the Mexican Ballet for the Disabled, as well as the Unik Breakers Crew and Boogie Up groups.
