Cristina Kahlo presented her photographic work at Art Basel

July 19, 2018

For the second time in her career, photographer Cristina Kahlo exhibited her work in the city of Basel, Switzerland, where she presented the exhibition PostHispanic MX during the Art Basel Fair in June.

The exhibition, "was opened in Basel on June 2 and the idea of the exhibition was to show the relationship we have with the pre-Hispanic world, how to reflect on the past and present, which it´s very important to me”, she said.

“There is like a series of images, of diptychs and triptychs, in which I photographed pre-Hispanic pieces, but at the same time I was photographing the visitors of the Anahuacalli Museum, which is in Mexico City”, she said at the exhibition that is not yet presented in our country.

While, she said, the PostHispanic MX project emerged from the collection of pre-Hispanic pieces that Diego Rivera donated to the people of Mexico, the curiosity also led the photographer to reread books such as El pueblo del sol, to reflect on all the stories that revolve around the pre-Hispanic gods.

The Bellevue Ort Für Fotografie Gallery was the place that hosted PostHispanic MX, an exhibition consisting of 45 digital print and inkjet images, many of them colored, as they were watercolored by the artist.

The exhibition was a great success and according to Cristina Kahlo, the public reception was surprising, as Basel is a small city where there were at the same time four important fairs besides her exhibition, among them Photo Basel.

However, the opening of PostHispanic MX alone was attended by more than 180 people and during the four weeks it was on display, over 500 visitors were registered, approximately 120 people a week, which Cristina Kahlo described as "super good".

The photographer highlighted that this is the second time she has exhibited her work in this Swiss city, since in 2006 she exhibited the series Noviembre II there and now she is back with PostHispanic MX, which she was able to take thanks to the support of the Fondo Nacional para la Cultura y las Artes (Fonca, for its acronym in Spanish).

"I am totally pro-Fonca, let me tell you, I am a fan of Fonca and I have participated in many aspects, I was in the Arts Commission and also a tutor of Young Creators in Photography, I know how these supports are developed and let's say this is the first time that I ask for Fonca’s support”.

Thanks to this organization, she was able to travel with her work to Europe and even create a catalogue of the exhibition. "Yes, it is a great help, it is very important because through art there are always important bonds with other countries and new projects are generated. This support is very much appreciated, because it is always the door to new projects and new perspectives are opened up, she said.

In addition, people from other countries can appreciate Mexican artists’work, as in this case, since PostHispanic MX is an exhibition that is not yet presented in our country.

Cristina Kahlo said that this is the first time this exhibition is open to the public in Switzerland, since only a few pieces, about three initiated the project, were presented in the Anahuacalli Museum.

Although there are still no plans for PostHispanic MX to be exhibited in Mexico, the photographer said that it is very likely that the exhibition will travel to Canada in November to be presented at the Mexico Space in Montreal.
