Swiss designer and sculptor H.R Giger´s legacy and work will arrive at the Cervantino International Festival XLVI edition

August 10, 2018

As part of the theme The future is today of the 46th edition of the International Cervantino Festival (FIC), the figure and proposal of the artist Hans Ruedi Giger (1940 - 2014) will be present with master lectures and two exhibitions: Dark Scene by H.R. Giger, the genius of the future, and Creators of legends 2017. Tribute to H.R. Giger.

The Spanish Carlos Arenas (1971), specialist and author of a doctoral thesis on the work of the Swiss designer and sculptor, will give the lecture H.R. Giger a legend of biomechanics on Friday October 12.

In a videoconference via Skype with the media, he said that the creative is a personality who will be talked about much more in the coming years.

He described him as a creator of interest to young people, artists, researchers, academics and teachers, whose artistic work has not been fully disseminated since he is almost always recognized internationally as the creator of the xenomorph of the movie Alien.

He said that his graphic work, sculptures, airbrushes, designs and furniture are not so well known, so the exhibitions and talks that will be in the Cervantino will be a good opportunity to publicize the importance of this artist of the late twentieth century, in the present and for the twenty-first century.

"His art is often associated in some way with the biomechanical that synthesizes the biological and the mechanical, he was an artist of the fantasy whose work had a very intimate connection with reality and what was happening around him, such as the destruction of the environment, genetic manipulation, violence, wars, torture, the world of medicine, and technological advances, preventing the dangers of progress”.

The independent curator and professor at the University of Valencia, Spain, added that Giger studied industrial design and his work was influenced by the horror literature of Lovecraft, and by artists such as Francis Bacon and Salvador Dalí, creating a peculiar style.

"He consulted works of literature, encyclopaedias, books on medicine and biology, assimilated them in a personal way and then reflected in his drawings in an artistic manner. When he began to paint with the airbrush, something that at the time was only used in advertising, he gave his work a modern hyperrealistic touch, which defines the style of Giger," said Carlos Arenas.

The art history doctor shared that he studied the figure of H.R. Giger because it seemed to him a symptomatic case of the culture of the eighties and nineties. "He had the ability to connect worlds as diverse as cinema, video games, literature and the world of fashion," he said

Mexican artist César Oropeza, curator of the two exhibitions, will give the lecture H.R. Giger, sublime darkness. He said that Giger's visual work is relevant because of his visionary roots and he showed a wide interest in Mayan and Egyptian culture, and his house in Zurich was full of books with images of ancient cultures.

In the Sala Polivalente of the University of Guanajuato, the exhibition Dark Scene by HR Giger, the genius of the future, will be exhibited from October 10 to January 15. More than 35 pieces, including originals and duplicates will be on display.

César Oropeza said that it will be one of the most extensive exhibitions with original work to be presented in Mexico, which will show an exquisiteness in terms of design and artistic work.

"The museographic approach is based on the animation of Giger's paintings. All the pieces will be the focus because none has been seen in Mexico, we hope it will be the tip of the iceberg to see the world of this creator".

The other exhibition Creators of legends 2017. Tribute to HR Giger, a collective event, will be held from October 10 to 28 at the gallery Quixote at La Luna, located at the ISSSTE Regional Cultural Center in the Western Center, Guanajuato.

Thirty artists from Mexico, Germany, the United States, Spain, Japan, Switzerland and the United States will participate in this event. "The exhibitors are reinterpreting the artistic heritage of this genius to offer a tribute to his life and artistic work," said Oropeza.

Carlos Arenas described the exhibition Creators of legends as interesting because it will present a connection with young culture. "Most of the artists are Mexican and all have in common that they are very talented, so they have an influence or follow the creative trail of Giger showing the power of the images of this Swiss artist in contemporary culture today.

Recognized as one of the key artists of fantasy realism, H.R. Giger was born in Chur, Switzerland, and moved to Zurich in 1962, where he studied architecture and industrial design at the School of Applied Arts.
