The International Meeting: Intellectual Property and Cultural Heritage in the Digital Age will take place

August 13, 2018

The International Meeting on Interaction with Cultural Heritage in the Digital Age, organized by the Digital Technologies for the Digital Diffusion of Cultural Heritage Thematic Network (REDTDPC, for its acronym in Spanish), has been an important space for academic reflection, to discuss issues related to cultural heritage and the use of new technologies.

This 4th edition will be dedicated to reflection on the use of digital tools for the preservation and dissemination of traditional knowledge and tangible and intangible heritage. It will seek, particularly, to share the experience of advocacy cases, platforms and collective rights licensing that have emerged in recent years to protect traditional knowledge in the digital ecosystem.

The Meeting will be attended by national and international guests who will provide an overview of the state of the art in Mexico and around the world, on legislation and protection of the collective rights of indigenous peoples, in relation to intangible cultural heritage, and the importance of developing strategies focused on expanding these rights in digital ecosystems.

Representatives of the National Institute of Indigenous Languages, the General Directorate of Popular, Indigenous and Urban Cultures of the Department of Culture of the Government of the Republic and the National Coordination of Anthropology of the National Institute of Anthropology and History will reflect on the institutional context of our country for the protection of collective rights.

For their part, different non-governmental organizations, artisans' groups and researchers will present cases where the collective rights of indigenous peoples have been violated and the different strategies that have been generated to defend them. These examples of specific cases will be complemented by the experience of lawyers from civil society and institutions who have taken on the legal defense of indigenous peoples and rights in digital production in Mexico.

In the international context, researchers and activists from the University of Washington, University of California and the international collective Global Voices will be present to share experiences in the use of digital tools for the preservation of intangible cultural heritage and traditional knowledge.

The encounter will be held on August 21 and 22, from 10 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. at the San Agustín Arts Center in San Agustín Etla, Oaxaca. Admission is free and the event is open to the public. This edition is given thanks to Conacyt through the REDTDPC and with the support of the Cultural Center of Spain in México, the San Agustín Arts Center and the National Coordination of Anthropology of INAH.
