Michèle Noiret brings choreography in homage to Stockhausen at the Cervantino

September 04, 2018

From Belgium, the Michèle Noiret company will arrive at the International Cervantino Festival (FIC, for its acronym in Spanish), with a choreography that finds new aesthetics and ways of doing dance in the sounds and the body itself, which dialogues with the music through fine movements.

Palimpseste Solo/Duo is a tribute to the controversial musician and exponent of the German electronic movement, Karlheinz Stockhausen, based in Tierkreis, one of his most harmonic compositions, where the Belgian Michèle Noiret, accompanied by the French dancer, David Drouard, will present this new proposal to the public of the most important cultural festival of our country.

Materialized through 15 years of inspiration and work, it is composed by "12 melodies of approximately 2 minutes with 30 seconds each, that play with the signs of the zodiac and the four elements, creating characters for each one of them", detailed the choreographer in a press conference via Skype, where she also qualified her work as a calligraphic version of what has arisen in her own body after the first encounter with Stockhausen's music.

The staging, divided into a solo and a duet, where the first part is a reminiscence of her previous work with respect to the German compositions, based on a first creation she made in 1997, now addressed "from a polyphonic perspective, where each part of my body works specifically with some part of the music", she said.

Noiret recalled that the solo was adapted for the big screen by inspiring the Solo and A Mains nues tapes, directed by the filmmaker Thierry Knauff, and that 10 years later, having analyzed all the movements created, she reinterpreted them from another perspective, transferring them from the cinema to the stage, which is why the piece is named "palimpseste", which is a manuscript in which the primitive text has been erased, by scraping or another procedure, in order to rewrite a new one on it.

This staging, which will also bring together on stage artists such as pianist Thomas Besnard and clarinetist Hannah Morgan, was originally created for the Chaillot National Theatre in Paris, and on this occasion will be preceded by an introductory talk given half an hour before the event by the dance critic Rosario Manzanos in the lobby of the building.

After the performance, attendees will have the opportunity to establish a dialogue with the artist, who is a member of the Royal Academy of Belgium and has been an associate artist of the national theater of the Walloon region of Brussels, from 2006 to 2017.

Michèle Noiret's choreographies include those acclaimed on various stages in the European Union, In between, Sait-on jamais, Territoires intimes and Chambre blanche.

For his part, French dancing actor David Drouard has also worked with choreographers of the stature of Odile Duboc, in addition to having participated with several dance companies, including Lionel Hoche, Abou Lagraa, Delphine Gaud and Kader Belarbi.

Drouard was awarded First Prize by the Nureyev Foundation at the Paris International Dance Competition in 2000 for his first project. Eight years later, he completed his first production: Gravity, a piece for four dancers.

Palimpseste Solo/Duo will be presented on Monday October 22 at 18:00, at Teatro Cervantes in the city of Guanajuato, Guanajuato. For more information on the wide and varied cultural offer of the XLVI of the FIC, please visit https://festivalcervantino.gob.mx/
