The XX International Contemporary Dance Festival 2018 will take place from September 20th to 30th in several venues in the city of Morelia, reported Erika Verónica González Rodríguez, head of the Division of Dance of the Department of Culture of the State of Michoacán.

In this edition, important local, national, South Korean and Colombian groups will participate as guest nations, offering the best of their artistic repertoire.

The event organized by the Department of Culture of Michoacan, the Directorate of Cultural Promotion and the Division of Dance, will present 12 companies with more than 120 dancers that added to the logistical support involves 200 people.

The groups Meta Dance from South Korea and Reacción Vertical from Colombia stand out, along with the Ilusorio Dance Group of maestro Juan Ramírez, a member of the National System of Creators.

The venues for this relevant event will be the majestic Ocampo Theater in the capital city, the Casa de Cultura in Morelia, the Museum of Contemporary Art and the Casa Taller, Alfredo Zalce and the Clavijero Cultural Center.

The aim of the meeting is to offer a space of recognition for the dedication to art, development and artistic creation of the dancers, either in groups or individually, stressed Gonzalez Rodriguez.

He pointed out that the intention is to keep a place as a free space for the expression and creation of artistic activities for contemporary dance.

"The festival is organized year after year with the aim of offering quality programs and events, above all for a very specific audience or for those who do not know about contemporary dance in order to create new audiences".

Regarding the attendance of groups from other countries, he explained that they are groups settled in their countries of origin because they seek a cultural exchange that allows to establish the state of development, quality and how the artists of the invited nations live the dance.

To ensure a solid and efficient cultural exchange, "the dancers will give master classes to the Michoacán choreographers and to the general public, with the interest of knowing their techniques that serve as an artistic update.

At the same time, the International Colloquium of Contemporary Dance of Michoacan 2018 will take place and will offer a program that will contain didactic tables of five workshops, six work tables, two master classes, a lecture and the presentation of a book.

"The configuration of the work activities were done with the collaboration of the artistic community specialized in contemporary dance in the state”.

"Two workshop instructors belong to the National System of Creators, one of them will be master José Humberto Vega Ibáñez, who will offer the workshop Body Action, and Edgar Manuel Fragoso, who will give the workshop-laboratory State of the Body, both showed great interest in being in Michoacán”.

Both workshops will explain how the body communicates during the dance activity and in the creativity of the artists, how the body is shaped in the presentation to the public.

The head of the Division of Dance of the Department of Culture of the State of Michoacan assured that there is a specific public that annually waits for the celebration of the international festival and the State Exhibition of Contemporary Dance (MEDCOM, for its acronym in Spanish).

"The project we are presenting is extremely attractive and will create new audiences that will have a pleasant approach to contemporary dance”.

Among the achievements made with the continuity of the festival it highlights the consolidation of its international nature with the participation of quality groups based abroad that allow the realization of a cultural exchange.

Also, its achievement is the result of collaboration with the artistic community specialized in Michoacán contemporary dance concerned about its enrichment and permanence in an  appropriate and attractive format to the public.

Erika Verónica González recalled that last month MEDCOM was held, where in addition to the presentation of 19 local companies, there were talks given by masters Manuel Parra, Sergio Rojas and Israel Chavira, among others; two keynote speeches and six workshops.

The state exhibition was presented in the towns of Lázaro Cárdenas and Pátzcuaro as well as in the state capital at the Alfredo Zalce Contemporary Art Museum, the Casa de Cultura de Morelia and the Centro Cultural Clavijero.

MEDCOM was the ideal space for the planning of the International Contemporary Dance Festival, and seeing that "contemporary dance enjoys great acceptance, we must continue to create these spaces for specific and new audiences, where both the artistic community and the general public can enjoy the presentations of dance activities”.
