The School of Life opens in Mexico City
September 21, 2018The School of Life arrived in Mexico with the opening of its first space in Mexico City. The traditional concept of a bookstore highlights through a wide range of products, videos, a series of lectures-classes, texts, games and reading clubs that develop emotional intelligence.
The School of Life is a global organization dedicated to developing emotional intelligence that seeks the best ideas of psychology, philosophy and culture to apply to everyday life.
Its growth to our country is the result of the efforts of Salvador Briman and Andrés Roemer, along with the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO), One Day University, Grupo Salinas, La Ciudad de las Ideas and The Day of Knowledge.
Andrés Roemer defines it as: "a school of emotional intelligence where one never finishes learning through many tools". The headquarters of The School of Life in Mexico City opened on Thursday night, September 20, at Avenida de las Palmas No. 340, colonia Lomas de Chapultepec.
During the opening he explained: "it is a bookstore, more with a shop of products, with a series of lectures of classes and videos; with exercises of reading club; games of being, everything in a fun way to generate emotional intelligence in the citizens".
The School of Life is a concept that was born in England with philosopher Alain de Botton, who has taken his thinking to Paris, Amsterdam, Antwerp, Istanbul, Rio de Janeiro and now Mexico City.
The aim is "to spread knowledge through humanism, philosophy, art and science, to have a critical, questioning, inquisitive, open mind in order to work the emotional strength with yourself”.
Andrés Roemer explained that "it’s a school of life, much more than a bookstore. The books accompany this school in a concept that brings together a series of projects carried out in collaboration with The City of Ideas, The Day of Knowledge and Entrepreneurship of Ideas, in alliance and partnership with UNESCO" to open a space in Mexico.
In this space, the public will find courses, reading clubs, games, notebooks by Sigmund Freud, Friedrich Nietzsche, Martin Heidegger, Emmanuel Kant, among other great philosophers.
Also, there will be texts about how to be satisfied with oneself, along with several materials to work with one's sexuality, being itself, in one's family and work relationships.
"It's a school that doesn't really exist in the university. It is a school to learn from me, to learn how to interact with and choose a career, how to have a pleasant life and better communication, with my wife, my family and my children”.
"To learn to have introspection with myself, to understand my fears, phobias and yearnings. That is found in The School of Life. It's a place of personal formation”.
Andrés Roemer said that it is a bet "not to let the learning finish, to teach us to find new ideas".
The School of Life has games, videos, classes, different exercises, television programs for really, as human beings, never stop learning, having a mind that resolves many of our cognitive dissonances and makes us more aware of the meaning of life.
It is the first bookstore with this concept in the country. Its opening required years of negotiations to get the franchise. It is the initiative of Salvador Briman and Andrés Roemer.
The expansion project in the capital of the country and the rest of the national territory will depend on the acceptance of the concept.
Classes will be offered throughout the Republic through Knowledge Day, which are lectures given in large forums by the professors best evaluated by their students, who will expose topics about several concepts that are not learned elsewhere.
There have been courses on how, if you are a person of serotonin or dopamine, androgens or estrogens, how it affects the mind to relate to others, to get a partner, to do negotiations.
It also deals with astrophysics, which are the three pieces of music that have most impacted the humility, about the psychology of money. The next one will be about how to be a film critic, among others.
"They are part of the group of activities to generate a cultural industry where knowledge is entertaining and intelligence is a daily tool," said Andres Roemer.
The extensive collection includes video materials that explain what meritocracy means, what happens with the market system, how it improves your communication, on how to understand the great philosophers.
It also deals with the debate on atheism, how to understand status anxiety; texts on sexuality, how to be a good person, how to love yourself and your work, how to be optimistic in an intelligent way about life, in other topics.
The School of Life is an open space for all kinds of audiences. The only requirement is to love to learn, want to grow, never stop questioning, it’s for creative minds and to awaken that love for knowledge, especially the love of introspection, to know yourself.
The bookstore was inaugurated by Andrés Roemer, who was accompanied by his wife Pamela Cortés, Salvador Briman, Alejandro Roemer and magistrate Alberto Pérez Dayán, minister of the Supreme Court of Justice of the Nation.
