The 38th FILIJ presents over 2,500 activities in its third year at the Bicentennial Park

The 38th International Children's and Youth Book Fair (FILIJ, for its acronym in Spanish) will offer over 2,500 activities that will include workshops, music, theater, storytelling, cinema, creative games, readings, different shows, among others, with the participation of 145 exhibitors and nearly 1,300 publishing houses, in its third year at the Bicentennial Park.

FILIJ’s 38th edition Guests of Honor will be the Pacific Alliance, made up of Chile, Colombia, Peru and Mexico, which will bring a wide selection of its editorial, cultural and artistic activity, as well as the state of Sinaloa. The main themes of the bookseller's meeting will be: inclusion, diversity, community and emotions.

During the presentation of the general program of the fair, held on Wednesday, October 3, the Secretary of Culture of the Government of the Republic, María Cristina García Cepeda, stressed that 38 years after its creation, the FILIJ has grown and diversified with the participation of several publishing houses and artistic activities, and has increased the attendance of its visitors.

She said that the fair already has international recognition. "It is the most important fair for children and young people in the Spanish-speaking world, which offers a wide artistic and cultural program and an extensive and varied editorial offer”.

Regarding the participation of the countries of the Pacific Alliance, María Cristina García Cepeda said that it is part of a regional integration strategy, "which supports the economic development of creative industries, particularly in the publishing sector, in the consolidation of the corridor of artistic and cultural exchange that exists between countries”.

The head of Culture pointed out that FILIJ is ready to celebrate its 38 years of existence, fulfilling its purpose of disseminating and promoting the exercise and right to reading and writing; promoting the production and circulation of publications for children and young people; working on the creation of new public readers and strengthening cultural services in non-traditional spaces, beyond the existing cultural infrastructure.

Marina Núñez, general director of Publications of the Department of Culture, explained that there will be particular emphasis on the offer for young people interested in urban culture, in spaces such as Skate Park with literary beat box, slam poetry sessions, and groups that address genres such as hip hop, punk, rock and ska.

There will also be a total of 42,000 students enrolled in the School Visitation Program.

Visitors will have at their disposal over 1,400 sessions of workshops to encourage reading, 150 stage shows, 50 concerts and 250 narration sessions. There will be more than 280 sessions of storytelling, reading aloud and poetry. Oral narrators and poets from Colombia, Chile, Peru, Guatemala, Japan, Costa Rica, Spain, and states such as Sinaloa, Guanajuato, Oaxaca, Chihuahua, Morelos, Hidalgo and the State of Mexico will be presented. There will be performances in Nahuatl, ñuu savi, hñähñu with interpretation in Mexican Sign Language (LSM).

Regarding the program for professionals, Marina Núñez pointed out that there will be close to 100 national and international speakers and 95 activities such as the 20th edition of the International Seminar for the Promotion of Reading, the Third International Seminar on Illustration, which will also be held in San Agustín Etla, Oaxaca and, for the first time, the Day of Creative Industries for Children and Young People and the National Meeting of Ferieros (Fair organizers).

The program of Chile, Colombia and Peru, members of the Pacific Alliance in which Mexico also participates, stands out for the participation of writers, illustrators, editors and professionals in the promotion of reading such as Sol Undurraga, winner of the Opera Prima Award at the Bologna Book Fair; Vicente Reinamontes, Sara Bertrand, Mario Mendoza, Pilar Lozano, Yolanda Reyes, Issa Watanabe, Jairo Buitrago and Santiago Roncagliolo. There will also be the presentation of the successful program 31 Minutes with its main characters, on November 10 at 5 p.m.

The Ambassador of Peru in Mexico, Julio Garro Gálvez; the Ambassador of Colombia in Mexico, Patricia Cárdenas Santa María, and the Ambassador of Chile in Mexico, Domingo Arteaga, agreed that FILIJ has become one of the most renowned national and international fairs for the promotion of literature in Mexico.

"The leaders of the region have agreed to instruct the group in charge of cultural issues to prioritize the publishing sector and develop, through different policies, the facilitation of trade and distribution of books, so this fair comes at a very good time in that direction," said the Ambassador of Colombia in Mexico, Patricia Cardenas Santa Maria.

She added that as part of the delegation of Colombian creators, writers Yolanda Reyes and Pilar Lozano, illustrators Silvia Escalante and Claudia Rueda and a musical group will be there.

Chile's Ambassador to Mexico, Domingo Arteaga, said that fairs like this one contribute to revitalize, revalue and give meaning to this beautiful universe of books, "that world of imagination that oneself builds”.

Among the international creators attending the 38th FILIJ are Isol Misenta, winner of the Astrid Lindgren Award; Roger Mello, Hans Christian Andersen Award; Oliver Jeffers, Best Book Award at the Bologna Book Fair; Pablo Bernasconi, Chiara Carrer, Sally Green, Ana María Machado, Katie Scott, Gusti, Célia Chauffrey, Chiqui González, Pablo Maurette, Cecilia Bajour, Javier Zabala, Javier Ruescas, Jan Willem Bult and Ferdinand Lutz. The ex-football player, coach and sports commentator Mario Alberto Kempes will also come to present his autobiographical book Matador.

Mexican children's and young people's literature will be represented by some of its main exponents such as Cecilia Rébora, Ambassador FILIJ 2018; Benito Taibo, Alberto Chimal, Mónica B. Brozon, Alberto Villarreal, Antonio and Javier Malpica, Martha Riva Palacio, Raquel Castro, Bef, Elmer Mendoza, F. G. Haghenbeck, Francisco Hinojosa, Juan Villoro, Fernando Rivera Calderón, Armando Vega Gil, Mauricio Gómez Morín, Monique Zepeda and Rafael Barajas "El Fisgón".

Papik Ramírez, director of the Institute of Culture of Sinaloa, explained that as Guest of Honor, will offer workshops, editorial presentations, theater, dance, puppets, clown, yoreme cinema in Mayo language, interactive musical shows, carnival, traditional band music and gastronomy.

Alicia Espinosa de los Monteros, president of the Children's and Youth Books Committee of the National Chamber of the Mexican Publishing Industry (Caniem, for its acronym in Spanish) and the Secretary of Culture of Mexico City, Eduardo Vázquez, who expressed his appreciation for the work developed by the Department of Culture in strengthening the promotion of books and reading, also attended the presentation.  

As part of the 38th FILIJ, the Metro Collective Transport System will issue a special ticket; there will be a commemorative Metrobus card and the National Lottery will print a ticket with the image of the fair.

The 38th International Children's and Young People's Book Fair will be held from Friday, November 9 to Monday, November 19, from 10:00 to 19:00 at the Bicentennial Park, located at Avenida 5 de Mayo No. 590, Colonia San Lorenzo Tlaltenango, Del. Miguel Hidalgo in Mexico City.
